The High Street has embraced the gold rush and so should YOU this season

This season, the High Street has embraced the gold rush more than ever. Yet, for ladies over a certain age, it’s often considered a sartorial no-no.

Many feel that, once they’re over the age of 50, gold is too attention-seeking.

Some also believe it is difficult to wear, particularly if their hair is grey, as they assume it will wash them out.

To prove that women of a certain age can be elegant in gold, we asked author and former model Sandra Howard, 76, model Daphne Selfe, 87, and actress and author Jane Asher, 70, to model some golden styles and give their verdict on each look.

During the festive season, gold comes into its gloriously extravagant own.

Enter any fashion store and your eyes will be dazzled by a shimmering sea of sequin-embellished dresses, all the decadent hue of a festive Ferrero Rocher wrapper.

‘It is a classic choice for a special occasion, and can be wonderfully flattering for older women, as Helen Mirren shows when she wears it,’ says fashion stylist and presenter Naomi Isted.

Naomi insists that gold illuminates mature skin and hair and takes years off the wearer.

‘The right gold can work brilliantly to offset grey hair and brighten older complexions — it’s about choosing the right shades for your skin tone.

‘Women with darker skin tones can take their pick of hues, while paler ladies need to be slightly more careful.

‘The gold detail on a black top or dress can be very flattering for pale skin tones, as can rose gold, which is gold with a pinkish hue.’

Naomi recommends holding golden garments up to the face to see if they boost your skintone.

For women who remain cautious, however, the trend can be embraced by mixing one piece, whether it’s a gold skirt, bag or pair of shoes, with a less daunting black or white outfit.

Stella Maxwell and 'pregnant' Irina Shayk make sidewalk their catwalk as they flaunt long legs on shopping trip in LA

They clearly enjoy each others company.

Model friends Stella Maxwell, 26, and Irina Shayk, 30, took a break from their runway duties on Tuesday to do a little shopping in Beverly Hills.

The duo appeared to be in good spirits as they strolled along Rodeo Drive arm-in-arm showing off their slender pins.

Stella looked chic in black leather high-rise pants and a black top, which she paired with a short black suede jacket and black ankle boots.

She wore her long blonde hair in loose waves, parted romantically to the side and appeared to wear very little makeup on her naturally pretty face.

Irina complemented her famous friend, showing off her equally long legs in thigh-high black boots and an olive green sweatshirt dress that barely covered her torso.

Her loose dress covered any signs of a baby bump, as she's rumored to be expecting with boyfriend Bradley Cooper.

Earlier this month, the Victoria Secret angel was spotted with what looked like an engagement ring on her finger.

The stunning emerald-and-diamond ring has already been compared to Princess Kate’s heirloom sapphire from Prince William.

The Russian-born beauty has been dating the A-list actor since 2015.

Neither Irina nor Bradley has yet commented on the pregnancy reports.

For her part, Stella has been busy visiting Kristen Stewart in Georgia on the set of her new film.

Gemma Arterton continues to show off her short locks in elegant black dress as she cosies up to Tom Hiddleston at party for Saint Joan play

She's starring in new play, Saint Joan - and Gemma Arterton and her good pal Tom Hiddleston were celebrating at the after party of the press night on Monday night.

Gemma Arterton plays Joan Of Arc in Bernard Shaw's classic, which will be broadcast live, to cinemas around the world, directly from the Donmar Warehouse on Thursday 16 February 2017.

Tom is a good friend to the theatre, after starring in Corionalus there previously.

The firm friends were no doubt thrilled to be letting their hair down together, with Gemma showing off her recently shorn locks at London's Hospital Club.

She looked incredible wearing a calf length black dress which had subtle embellishments and red satin strappy shoes.

The beauty was also pictured cuddling her younger sister Hannah, who is also an actress.

Taylor Swift's ex Tom appeared in fine form in his suit as he posed for a selection of snaps.

Earlier this year, Gemma told the Daily Mail's Baz Bamigboye that she was 'not the obvious choice' to play the title role.

She said: 'It's not the type of thing I usually play. My characters have usually got a bit more sass.'

Gemma is certainly a busy lady at the moment.

She has other projects planned with Stephen Woolley, one of the key producers on Their Finest.

Plus, there’s talk of her appearing with Romola Garai in Vita And Virginia: a film based on Eileen Atkins’ play about Vita Sackville West and Virginia Woolf.
